Review: Half-blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Published Date: October 18th, 2011
Finished Date: September 28th, 2011
Publishers: Spencer Hill Press

Format: Paperback
Pages: 281
Series: Covenant Book 1

Blurb from Goodreads:
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi -pure-bloods- have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:

Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.

Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden.

And that would kind of suck.

My Review

Imagine being avulsed from life as you know it, then witnessing your only surviving kin die before your eyes, being chased by blood-sucking fiends, being pulled back to your previous life but are going to be forced into a lifetime of servitude, then falling for the one guy that when people finds out, will sign your death slip, then finding out your kin is actually not dead and has turned into a monster and she is currently out for your blood, and then told you're actually not only who you actually thought you were, you're actually something else too?

Sucks, right? But that's basically the everyday life of Alexandria "Alex" Andros, the tragic heroine Armentrout saw fit to torture... LOL, nah, kidding. Even tho her life sucked balls big time, Alex was a tough-assed, witty-tongued, snarky-sassy attitude heroine who dealt with everything head-on. Although the snarky-ness and obstinacy tended to be rather immature sometimes..She's seventeen going on eighteen, so act like it! But she was still a pleasure to read.

I thought that the story was super fast-paced, Alex was always either up to some mischief, or trouble comes stalking and biting her in the ass. So much action and suspense, and the steamy hot romance between her and Aiden! Something's always happening, be it a good hot making out session, fending off daimons for their lives, daimons infiltrating the Covenant, those L.O.L witty banters and arguments between Alex and the world, there's just no time to do anything than to flip those crazy pages.

Now on to that endearing male heroine of ours, shall we? Aiden St. Delphi. Storm grey eyes that can turn silver when experiencing any strong emotions, which most of the time has Alex in the picture. Intense gaze. Fights like a god. Moves like those Twilight vamps. Reclusive and brooding. The triple P's - passionate, protective and possessive when it comes to Alex. And what does that scream? PERFECT HERO MATERIAL!

Haha.

The side characters were very supportive. Caleb, being the brother that she never had, was very protective and understanding of Alex, always there to lend a hand or a shoulder or an ear when she can no longer bottle everything up in her heart; Lea, the typical archnemesis, was absolutely drop-dead gorgeous and very bitchy; Marcus, Alex's uncle, and Daecon actually grew on me as the story progressed; Seth...This one's dangerous (even the pures are terrified of him, that kind of dangerous) and a potential love interest..Hehe, can't wait to read more on that in the next book, PURE!

All in all, you do not want to miss this book.

Random Musings (This time would not contain spoilers)

When I got to the Acknowledgements part, I was part laughing part feeling touched. Ok, let me quote some phrases out.

" I would like to thank my Mom and Dad for allowing me to write random stuff with permanent markers all over the walls of my bedroom when I was a teenager and not killing me. To Jesse, thank you for playing Barbies and Nintendo with me. "

" Oh, Chewie - my Chewsters, Chewtoy, also known as Chu-won Martin, you were my first friend to actually read anything I wote and not laugh. You will always hold a special place in my heart. "

LOL, but aww..But LOL.

Ok, you've gotta read the rest to fully experience the L.O.L moments that I had. She actually thanked her dog too! Haha. Armentrout's sure one eccentric, but brilliant writer. She's currently working on a few dozen other series, so you can support her and go to her blog to see her update statuses.

My Rating
P.S. I would give this book a 4.5, but I only have a 4 licks picture, soo...DEAL WITH IT! muahahhaa

  1. The Half-Bloods are either trained to be sentinels to protect the Pures or they are forced into servitude and become mindless drones. Daimons are a vampire like creature that drink the Aather that runs through the blood of the Hematoi. The divisions in class make up an interesting and diverse story line as you can imagine the conflicts that arise.

    1. Yes! Especially with the Greek references and all that romance! I loved that the climax of the book wasn't easily solved, and that Alex got roughed-up a bit. That actually made me like her even more actually. It shows how tough she really is, and I do love my strong heroines. :)
